Back to Basics : Golf Lessons at Golf Zone
When we swing a golf club what is it we are actually trying to do? Rather than get bogged down in all the detail try stopping and thinking for a moment.
When we swing a golf club, be it a driver, iron or anything else we are simply trying to move the clubhead through the ball, ideally square on to the target for a straight shot. We also want to be able to repeat this process of course.
When we put it like that it certainly sounds easier to understand than slide the hips, make a late hit, and all the other stuff we hear and read. I’m sure it is better to understand what we are trying to achieve rather than thinking about where to position assorted limbs at different times.
There are really only 4 variations that impact on the golf swing and work together to determine where your golf ball will go.
1. The direction the clubface is pointing
2. The line the swing follows
3. The angle at which the clubhead meets the ball
4. The speed of the clubhead
The most important of these is the direction or alignment of the clubhead at the point of impact. If this one is a way off then everything else will shift to match it. An open clubface, that is facing to the right, will create a swing that tracks on an out to in path. This path then naturally leads to a steeper than ideal angle upon striking the ball.
The opposite of this, a closed clubface, will normally have an in to out swingpath. This naturally creates a shallow approach angle to the ball which again will result in a shot that has not been struck as squarely or solidly as desired.
Work on following these simple steps and, as one step follows another so your golf game will benefit as your swing does.
