Biodegradable Golf Balls : Golf News

5 April 2011:

Golfers on cruise ships could soon be using golf balls made from lobster shells thanks to scientists at the University of Maine.

Although golf balls made from biodegradable materials do already exist these are the first to be created using discarded lobster shells, in conjunction with a biodegradable coating and binding. In addition to making use of what is currently seen as a waste product of the lobster industry there is a financial benefit to buyers since the cost of the materials used in the golf ball is less than for traditional biodegradable golf balls.

Looking at the performance of the golf ball it performs similarly to the current style biodegradable golf balls, with comparable distance and trajectory. Of course no biodegradable golf balls carry as far as a regular golf ball, but for the purposes of hitting some balls off a cruise ship they are perfect.
